Shel Silverstein Project Winners Announced

The assignment was to listen to four Shel Silverstein poems from the collection A Light in the Attic, choose one, and then with their team members create the character and the scene to enhance the reader’s awareness of the poem.  The students used recycled materials to create the forms and then used paper mache, paint and fabric to create the figures and setting.  The PVHS staff was given an open call to fill out a form to find the piece that best exemplified the poem.  The judges were looking for creativity and workmanship.  They were also looking for pieces that displayed the story and engaged the viewer.

Inside a Writer's Head

Many people have different ways of expressing their creativity, for example, through music and art. Ariadne Alvarado (9) finds her creativity in writing; scribbling on pages filled with unfinished thoughts desperately trying to write them all down. She started writing in the third grade and has loved it ever since. Ari took up writing because she loved that she could create just about anything.

When someone thinks of a writer, they would most likely imagine a person with hipster glasses typing on a MacBook every weekend at Starbucks, but most of the time, that's not the case. Here are some thoughts straight from a writer. "I think that the main thing that inspired me the most, was the sheer fact that just by using my mind, I could create something that could potentially change lives. I want to write something that years later people will still be able to remember. In the end, I think that's what every writer wants: to be recognized and remembered." She also says that writing is a way to cope with all the thoughts in her head, writing all of it down onto paper. "To simply put it, writing is my oxygen."

Ari, composing her thoughts.

Ariadne Avarado (9)

I have these thoughts so uncontrollable,

going mad with the desire to be freed.

Yet I hold them back in chains,

sitting in the screaming silence.

Because once they're freed,

I will have opened the door

to a hundred and one creations.
