Club Spotlight: PV Smash
PV Smash is a club that plays Super Smash Brothers and meets twice a week: at lunch Mondays and Fridays. They do meet more outside of school where they compete for cash prizes. Advisor Mr. Killian claims, “They’re very active. They competed at Cal Poly and against other high schools like Orcutt Academy.” President Steve Haro encourages everyone to give it a try, “You can learn quick. We have the best players on the central coast. Who wouldn’t want to try and win money by playing a game?”
Haro claims that this club gives mental athletes a chance to be someone, “Not everyone gets a chance to shine. You feel like you’re a somebody in this club. You don’t need to audition. No one will say, ‘No, you didn’t make the team.’ If you have the drive, you can be the best.”
The game itself is a fighting game where the objective is to knock the opponent off of the stage. There is no life bar, but a percentage identifying how close the character may be to getting knocked off. The character selection consists of various characters from other video games such as Super Mario Brothers, Legend of Zelda, Pokemon, etc. They all come clashed together to see who is the best of the best. -Christina Bulosan

“My favorite movie is Instructions not Included. It is about a young girl being left with her supposedly biological father because her mother thinks she is unable to take care of her daughter. The little girl and her father go through great adventures as she grows up! Devastating as it is, her mother comes back and tries to hold custody of her. But overall, it is one of the best comedy movies ever! It will really have you laughing."
“My favorite movie on Netflix is the Breakfast Club because it's about high school kids who get in trouble and bond over their day spent in detention on a Saturday. It is the ultimate best movie ever!”
“My favorite movie is Grease because I have always enjoyed old movies, but not too old. Also, I've always loved the style of 50's and 60's music so it was like that movie was meant for me. “

What did you do this summer?
Last summer, Emilia Martinez, junior, went on a road trip to Oklahoma with her family to see her grandparents.
Emilia spent about a week in Oklahoma. When driving around, she took many pictures and made great memories there. Emilia also spent countless nights staying up late just to get more out of the whole experience.
In an attempt to beat the Las Vegas heat, Emilia’s family made a stop at Sonic to buy ice cream. Emilia was excited to try some because Santa Maria doesn’t have a Sonic and she had never been to one before.
