Panthers Take Braves 25-13

Last night the lady Panthers Varsity Volleyball team went up against the Lompoc Braves. It was a riveting game as both teams fought for glory on the court; but in the end the Panthers came out victorious.

“It felt good to get a win,” said Coach Doyle. “There are obviously some things we still need to work on. For PAC 8 we`re going to go up against very competitive teams. We need to fine tune some things, but it definitely felt good to get another win under our belt.” The Panthers ended the third period with an outstanding lead of 25-13, cementing their victory after winning the previous periods.

JV Tennis Hosts Mission Prep

Yesterday the Girl's JV Tennis squad hosted Mission Prep of San Luis Obispo and put up a great fight!

Junior Alyssa Scannelli is among the most competitive players in the entire tennis program, and was named a captain of the JV roster because of it. She has an unmatched level of drive and ambition, and seasonal expectations should be high for the team leader.

A crop of sophomores populate the roster, from Czarlyn Camba to Arianna Scannelli to Erica Arredondo, all returners ready to make a big splash in 2015. There’s plenty more, though, with newcomers Jaezel Garcellano, Clarielisa Ocampo, Kathy Manzano, and Brita Vicente having made significant strides to earn themselves spots on the roster.

Camba is a model of power tennis, and while a lot of that power remains unrefined, she has the potential to become a star as she begins to hone that strength and form a balance. She will start out the season pairing up with cousin and close friend Ocampo, as the two have strong chemistry together.

Arianna Scannelli has a strong understanding of fundamentals and should be considered a force to be reckoned with at all times on the court with a bright future ahead. Erica Arredondo, younger sister of varsity’s Stephanie, has immense potential waiting to be unlocked as she develops into a well-rounded player. Arianna and Erica will initially be looking at a doubles pairing together, but they’ve both got the flexibility to roll over into the singles ladder down the stretch.

Garcellano, who began her tennis career in the spring, has taken large leaps over the course of the summer and now finds herself with a powerful skill set that has her in the singles ladder. The sky is the limit for the sophomore and her constantly-improving game.

Ocampo, who should initially slot in the doubles ladder alongside Camba, consistently shows immense resilience, emotional resolve, and athleticism. Expect to see those attributes pay big dividends as her fundamentals improve to assist her development into an all-around tennis machine.

Manzano and Vicente, both brand new players to the tennis program as sophomores, could find themselves in either the singles ladder or the doubles ladder to start out the season. While neither had much experience heading into the start of the school year, both players have taken tremendous strides in their development and have promising futures ahead for PV tennis. Manzano has found a groove and seems to be rapidly improving her skill set, while Vicente gets better by the day as well and demonstrates a strong tennis IQ.

Junior Hannah Sardina and senior Donna Loredo are also in their first year of playing tennis, and yet you might not know it by seeing the progress they’ve made since the beginning of their time on the courts. They should both find themselves alternating between singles and doubles throughout the season, as players with balanced skill sets.

Club Spotlight: GSA

Gay-Straight-Alliance (GSA) is a club where supporters and people of the LGBT community meet, get to know each other, and discuss the LGBT society. They meet every Wednesday in room 421 during lunch. Ms. Kent, GSA adviser says, "It's where people can come in and feel safe, making the school safer than it already is." There are about 30 students involved in the club.

These are what some of the members say about their meetings:

"I can express myself without being criticized." -Celine Avelino (11)

"It's a place to hang out to be open." -Nick Equihua (9)

"This means the world to me. It's amazing. This feels like family to me." -Isriel Cambronero (9)

These comments say it all, for many of these students and teachers participating, GSA will be their best experience at PVHS.
