Beware; It's Friday the 13th

*Gasp!* Friday the 13th is today! This infamous day has been marked on many calendars of the superstitious. The 13th of Friday is also known as 'Black Friday'- not the other day where you risk your life for a good deal. This unlucky day may have surfaced from the Middle Ages. Some phobias that correlate to this day include triskaidekaphobia, the fear of the number 13. People who have this fear avoid the number at all costs. Some may also fear the day itself which is called paraskevidekatriaphobia- the word in itself is scary! There are also the famous horror movies and video games including, 'Friday the 13th,' and the movie based video game inspired by this fateful day. People either dread this day or look forward to it. Either way, it's here!

Friday the 13th is believed to originate from various occurrences. Regarding Friday, some people believe it comes from the time that Eve blamed Adam for the eaten apple, costing them their deaths which occurred on that nonexistent Friday. Others believe it to be named after the Norse goddess Friday, who was the goddess of both love and death, as well as war and magic. She was then demonized by the Christian church after many unfortunate wedding happenings.

The number 13 is considered an unlucky number because of the number of people attended at The Last Supper, having Judas Iscariot the 13th person to be seated. Friday the 13th has a mysterious history and might have many unfortunate events waiting to happen. Superstitious or not, be careful and have a great weekend Panthers!

Student Spotlight: Chance Skaufel

Chance Skaufel is a senior here at PV and probably best known for being on the school’s water polo team; but Chance is involved in another sport outside of PV.  His other interest is Go Kart racing; which is a fast paced and surprisingly physical sport.

"This sport is different than others, because it is not team dependent. It's just you and the kart." Chance explains that the sport takes a lot of strategy and being aware of your actions and the people around you. Maintaining and adjusting the mechanics of the kart is also a big part of the sport. "People assume that karting is easy because they think it's just like driving a car, but it's a lot harder than that." With 3Gs against your body, it’s a lot tougher than you might think."

Racing can be very rewarding. Some races have cash prizes and some provide the opportunity to travel and meet new people. Racing is a huge hobby that has been a part of Chance's life since he was 7 years old. He has had many victories including national champion. You can even find stories written about him in karting magazines.
