Club Spotlight: Mock Trial

Mock Trial is a club that deals with the judicial aspects of our lives. It gives you an insight on how the legal system works when you are preparing for a case, whether you are an attorney or witness. As an attorney, you are in charge of making the case by looking through the entire case packet and searching for key subjects that could help your side. As a witness, you are in charge of knowing your statement inside and out and being able to perform your role. There are other roles you can play besides an attorney or a witness. The bailiff is in charge of escorting witnesses to the stand, making sure each witness understands the rules of Mock Trial, and keeping peace inside the court. The clerk has to make sure that the time is well recorded and to tell the attorneys when their time is over. If you are looking for insight on the applications of the judicial system in the real world, or you are great at debating, then Mock Trial is a great club for you.

-Nestor Lopez

“When I was a freshmen I became a clerk and managed to keep time quite well. I continued that my sophomore year and tried to help around finding information that I could give to the attorneys about their witnesses and what to be careful for. Then my junior year I became the witness Marty McCulloch and won an award for best portrayal of Marty McCulloch. This year we have presently started to filter through Mock Trial positions and I shall be the bailiff. It’s always interesting to see what our big time competitors will do.” - Nathan Wells (12)

“My experience in Mock Trial has been a great one. I loved going to the court house and getting to know the legal system. I was a witness my first two years of high school until my junior year when I became an attorney. This year I am a lead attorney for the defense and I hope I can guide my team to winning the case. In all, it was an extraordinary experience and I will surely miss it when I graduate this year.”

 –Nestor Lopez (12)

“My experience in Mock Trial has been great so far, going to the competition, preparing the case, and presenting that case in front of a real judge is very extraordinary. It's amazing and pretty fun as a prosecution attorney. You can say stuff and add little details in there, that aren’t in the case, so you can always find out if the defendant is guilty or not. It's a very fun experience.” – Chris Fuller (12)

Cooler Temps Make for Fall Fashion Opportunities

The season has now changed into fall and everyone is excited. It’s one of the most popular seasons for fashion because we get to dress all cozy and warm. The coats, sweaters, scarves, long socks, beanies, over-the-knee boots, and leggings are the coziest articles of clothing to wear! Fall is a time that girls can wear dresses and skirts paired with long socks and still feel warm because although it's getting cold, it's just a bit chilly and not full on winter. Long soft plaid scarves and infinity scarves have been very popular these past few years; they are a great way to keep yourself both warm and cute at the same time!

Meet the Morning Broadcast Crew

We hear their voices every single day. They give us our daily news that happen in and around Pioneer Valley. These people are Isaac Gonzalez, Roberto Hernandez, Chrissy Villafuerte and Angelica Juenke. They work together every morning to bring us the news.

Both Isaac Gonzalez and Angelica Juenke, juniors, plan to join next year for the announcement. Isaac explained, “I enjoy doing the announcements because I like everyone to hear my beautiful voice. I’m interested in this because I like speaking in front of people. I think this will help me later on in the future.”

One of the benefits of being part of the morning crew is knowing what’s going on around school ahead of everyone else. Another is actually being able to hear the announcements. To be a part of this announcement crew, auditions are held at the end of the year after school, while teachers listen and vote on who has a nice, clear voice. Angelica added to this with, “We are voted by teachers. We may not be right, but we qualify. I don’t think there is anything special about it, anyone can do this, and you just have to be out there.”

Along the way, throughout the year memories are made... "Angelica almost always accidentally leaves the microphone on. It's embarrassing because everyone could hear us being weird," Isaac recalls. “One morning I was getting ready to close, and Roberto got a water bottle and started flicking water at me, so there was a pause and I said, 'Have a.... Tuesday," Angelica shared.   “Isaac sneezed on the mic one time, and Roberto replied to him with ‘Bless you’ on the air. All I was thinking was that they are weird,” Chrissy explains. "Last year, Michael, the dude with the really nice, deep voice, came in to do the announcements. Unfortunately, he had a lot of phlegm in his throat, but continued to read even though he was attacked by a coughing fit. He coughed right into the mic too. It was really funny," Roberto shared. Without the morning broadcast crew, we wouldn't be up to date on many important things. It's nice to finally put faces to the voices. Thank you morning crew!
