AVID Trip Showcases Nor Cal Colleges

40 AVID students returned last night from a field trip that toured 4 colleges in California north of Santa Maria. They went to UC Santa Cruz, CSU San Jose, UC Davis and UC Berkley. 3 of the colleges had guided tours and one college (UC Davis) was a self-guided tour with an admissions presentation. A college visit can impact a person's thoughts about where they might want to attend. This trip had that kind of affect on some of the students. They experienced the quiet serenity of study times for mid-terms on one campus and the loud boisterous activity of a free speech "noon" activity on another campus.

Band Readies for Big Competition this Weekend

Have you ever gone to a local football game and heard music coming from the stands? Well that’s most likely the Pioneer Valley High School Panther Band. Although game performances are what they are best known for, the PVHS Band performs at many other venues. In fact, this coming weekend the band will be traveling to Southern California to compete in a field show competition. Band members will perform their half-time show and be able to see other bands perform theirs. They will also attend a Lion King Broadway Musical at the beautiful Segerstrom Performing Arts Center.

Ms. Wehlander, Director of Bands, had this to say about the upcoming trip, “Well I’m really excited for us to go down there because I think we’re going to be able to see some things we won’t have the opportunity to see elsewhere. There will be over 20 bands competing, 9 of which will be in our division. After we’re finished we will stay and watch the others. It’s going to be a great experience for all of us to watch what other programs from other parts of our state do. I’m really excited and we’ve been working so hard to get ready for this. It’s going to be a great weekend.”

"I feel good about the competition because L.A is a new experience; now as far as how we're going to do, I think we're going to get destroyed to be honest. L.A. focuses highly on the arts, like music, so I feel like we're going to get outclassed, buts it’s going to be fun" - Gabriel Hatter (10)

“I feel really hyped up because it’s my last time going to competition with the band, so might as well give it my all. After all the practicing, I think we'll do well."- Nikko Abanilla (12)

"Well the competition is different from previous years. The band has been practicing really hard though. Hopefully this competition will give a new perspective to new band members."  -Chrissy Villafuerte (12, Left)

"I feel like this is going to be a different experience for the band. It’s going to be really cool to go to a different competition where the standards are higher. It’s also going to be fun seeing other bands from different areas.“ -David (10, Right)

Teen in The….(Insert Generation Here)

Janet Lopez (12) would want to live in the 90's because of the music and what was going on then. She said, “It was a lot easier for people to communicate in person. Not everyone was stuck on electronics. More people were talking face to face, not texting.”

Mike Rena Pena (9) "I would like to live in the 90's so I could watch the best basketball player Michael Jordon. There was also better TV shows on like Power Rangers and other better TV shows then today."

Jouquin Moreno (9) would want to live In is the 90's. "I liked the way they dressed. I would watch professional basketball players win the championship and get to see Michael Jordon, Kobe Bryant, and Shaquille O'Neal."

Lisbet Barriga Chavez (9) "I would like to live in the 80's because everyone wore weird and fun clothes. I am not very good when it comes to fashion; I would look very weird."
