Is Cheerleading Calling You?

So you want to be a cheerleader but you’re not sure how to go about becoming one or what’s involved in being one. Most of the girls cheering at PV today started out when they were younger by taking gymnastics or cheering for youth football. This gives the prospective high school cheerleader some advantage because they were taught the basics and discipline at an early age. Getting a start in Junior High would also be advantageous.

For the would be cheerleader who does not have any prior experience,  if you have some rhythm and catch on quickly, great, you’ve got the basics. If you can hit every move sharply and yell your heart out then there is probably a spot for you on the team.

It takes a lot of confidence, heart, determination, and coordination to perform in front of the whole student body.  Cheerleading isn't for someone that may get bored of coming to practice every day from June, all summer, and through the end of February. Cheer really is a lifestyle and takes a lot of work and time. All this commitment is for your team, your school, and your peers. But don’t feel intimidated, with enough hard work and determination, cheer can become a part of your life too.

"Pay attention to chants, the dances, and jumps. You have to have good memory for everything and catch on fast, especially for Varsity. Practice makes everything perfect." Says Valerie Garcia (left), Senior Varsity cheerleader. "Catching on fast does not make or break you, but understanding what is happening and what is needed to get a dance, cheer, jump or stunt is what matters."

"It takes having a good memory and good commitment. You do not have to be really flexible but you do have to know what you are doing" States Sarah Garcia, (12) Varsity.

"It was difficult because I've never done anything like it you know?" said first year cheerleader Stephanie Castillo (12)(right), "Work your butt off even if you don't make it, you'll get this big 'what if' off your mind. And if you make it, it'll be the best feeling ever! Just work hard and believe in yourself!"
