FCA Guest Speaker Draws Big Crowd

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes had an exciting and powerful meeting yesterday. The lunch social, held for the girls’ volleyball program, was headlined by guest speaker Olivia Trudeau. Olivia grew up on the Central Coast in Arroyo Grande with a love for volleyball. She began her presentation with a story about her first time playing volleyball at the high school level. She confided in the audience about her fear of failure and explained how talking to her mother about her fear and her mother’s unconditional love helped her through this fear.

Olivia then expressed how she feels God has unconditional love for every one of us, and how she turns to God when she has any fears, doubts, or anxieties. When asked for a quote regarding the presentation, Olivia quoted this passage from the Bible: “Trust in the lord with all of your heart and lean not on your own understanding, acknowledge the lord in all your ways and he will make your path straight.” Proverbs 3:57. The meeting drew a big crowd of students who left feeling motivated and inspired.

Milinda and Justin’s Memorial Basketball Scholarship Tournament: 10/3

Two fallen Pioneer Valley High School JV basketball players will be memorialized on Saturday, Oct. 3.

The event also creates scholarships in the names of Milinda Parra and Justin Walker, killed in a traffic wreck near Ventura on June 22.

Parra’s presentation to her parents is scheduled for 1 p.m. and Walker’s is at 5 p.m. inside the gym. Parents will receive their jerseys.

“Both had aspirations of becoming varsity hoop players,’’ said PVHS Athletic Director Greg Lanthier. “They were both intelligent (good students), hard-working and well-liked by all of their classmates/teammates. By holding this event to raise money for scholarships in their name, we are giving all who were endeared to them a chance to help their name and their memory continue on in the hearts and minds of the PVHS family.’’

Varsity and junior varsity basketball teams from the Santa Maria Joint Union High School District and a few others will play games throughout the day to memorialize the pair.

All proceeds (admission, concessions, t-shirts) are earmarked for the memorial scholarships. Admission is $5 and celebration of life t-shirts are available for $10.

If you would like to make a donation or purchase a t-shirt, please contact Mr. Lanthier at 922-1305 ext. 5117.
