Memorial Day Weekend Has Arrived

The Memorial weekend (four days) is coming up and everyone is getting excited. The upcoming weekend is going to be filled with fun and joy, where people are going out of town, going to amusement parks, and hanging with friends and families. However, it can also be a time to just relax and see how long they can stay in bed, sound asleep. No matter what you plan on doing this long weekend, it's nice to have a small break from school! Here are some fellow panthers and their plans for this four day weekend.

What Are Your Summer Plans?

Summer is approaching and that means freedom is right around the corner. Fun activities are starting to happen. Traveling, hanging out at the beach, and sleeping are all attractive options for filling the two month school void. So what is your plan?

"Over the summer I'm going to work at Subway and get my car. I'm going to sleep a lot maybe go out of town to visit family." Manny Vasquez (12)

"I hope to go out to college or out in the world. Or if not, potentially receive a field supervisor job that pays $50,000. With that I'd pay for my parents’ house and some toys for me." Ezequiel Pena (12)

"For this summer I wanted to go on vacation to Canada but I have now faced reality that I have no money and that I am just a potato. So I'll be living in my sack with fellow potatoes."

-Sharayah Martinez (12)

"I'm planning on showing my pig at the fair and I'm most excited about going camping with my family." Sierra Rodriguez (9)

Bernie Sanders Comes to Santa Maria Saturday

If you haven’t heard Bernie Sanders is coming to Santa Maria. The rally will take a place this Saturday at Santa Maria High School in the Wilson Stadium. The doors open at 10:30 am. It’s free! For safety reasons bags won’t be permitted to enter the rally. Banners and signs also won’t be allowed. But personal items like cellphones and keys of course will be permitted into the rally.

“I’ve been a big supporter of Bernie Sanders for a longtime. Also I want to see all the anticipation of the topics he’ll going to propose.”

–Zander Moreno, 9

“I’m going to the Bernie Sanders rally because it seems like an amazing experience! I’ve never seen a real life politician. I’m a strong believer in what Sanders says! I love his ideas and I wouldn’t want to miss out on this moment. #FeeltheBern”

– Valerie B. Orozco, 12

“I didn’t support Bernie Sanders. I feel like he’s an extremist, and personally I view him as a communist.” – Nestor Lopez, 12

“Main reason, is I’m a republican. I don’t hate him just I’m just not interested in voting for him.”

–Madison Skaufel, 12

-Vanessa Nunez

I recommend going just for the experience. Whether you support Sanders or not. It’ll be a very cool experience. You’ll be able to see and a listen to a presidential candidate in real life. So if you’re free on Saturday head over to Santa Maria High School and see Bernie Sanders speak. Remember it’s free.

Angry Birds Movie Review

The movie has flightless birds living a closed and ignorantly happy life on an island, well except Red the main character. Red, who is easily annoyed by the daily occurrences in his life, ends up in anger management class where he meets Chuck and Bomb. Now even angrier with the way his life is going, the community of other birds welcomes pigs to their island. Red becomes suspicious of the pigs’ sudden arrival and actions, so he joins forces with Bomb and Chuck to find out what the pigs really plan on doing on the birds’ island. This movie features the birds from the popular app, Angry Birds, and shows off the special abilities each bird has in the game. Each bird had its own quirky personality and made the movie all the more hilarious. The Angry Birds Movie opened on May 20th and scored 2nd best debut weekend ever for a video game adaptation. Overall it’s a great movie for young children with a good message for them.

What Makes a Good Teacher?

What are some characteristics that you think a good teacher should have? Many teachers can be caring about their students, but what makes them such a good teacher? Here at PVHS there are lots of teachers who have great personalities that make the school and the world a better place. I asked around to find out what the Panthers thought of what makes a teacher great.

Karina Chavez (12), "I think a good characteristic for a teacher to have is to be understanding and to have a good sense of humor."

Nicholas Brady (12), "I think they shouldn't smoke before or during school hours so that they don’t stink up the classroom and they shouldn't hide their middle names from their students."

Brandon Olvera (12), "Teachers should be helpful, nice, and patient with their students because not everyone is the same. Some people understand things more than others.

Susana Vazquez (11), "I think a good teacher is someone who doesn’t give homework because it makes students not want to come to school. It stresses us out."

-Jasmin Ramos
