Seniors Rake it in at Awards Night

Photos by D. Howard,

Story w/Pics by Catalina Lopez

Senior awards night is a ceremony held to honor students who have worked incredibly hard and have stayed dedicated to their clubs and school work throughout their high school years. Many students were honored last night with medals, cords, sashes, and certificates. These honorable gifts of gratitude are to be worn at graduation, so people can see the students' accomplishments. Students earn these awards by being active members in the community, being vital members of clubs, and excelling in academics. The night was filled with a great amount of students receiving scholarships too. For many of the students, they viewed it as one of the final stepping stone towards graduation.

"Senior awards night is bittersweet because I am proud of myself for receiving my awards, but I am sad about high school ending. I am proud of myself for pushing to succeed, and I am determined to continue my success in college."- Ana Marie Fruge

"It makes senior year really feel like it's ending. I'm excited that all my hard work in high school has paid off. I also look forward to seeing my hard work pay off in college."

- Rose Anaya

"Being awarded and at senior night feels great because it's an honor to be recognized for all our accomplishments throughout high school." - Salma Martinez

"I feel very honored to receive an award. I'm proud of myself for achieving my goals. Senior awards night also brings me the realization that high school coming to an end."

Jhony Hurdles His Way to CIF

-Mona Garcia

Congratulations to Jhony Diaz for a great Track and Field season. He ran the 110 Hurdles and 300 Hurdles at CIF prelims this past Saturday but will not go on to finals. Jhony is one of the best hurdlers on the entire central coast. Here’s what Johnny had to say:

“I’ve done track since freshman year so I have only done it for four years. Fernando Basulto was my Role model. He motivated me a lot to run as hard as I can and I looked up to him in running like him someday. Especially since after my track meet he would text me and ask for my times and how I did it motivated me even more to get where he once was. I think my most prideful moment was being able to obtain league champ my senior year. At that meet I was trailing two guys and was in third place but I didn't give up and kept running hard and it all payed off in the end.

I think what I love about track the most is the fact that when you're about to compete everyone wishes you luck and throughout the races everyone cheers you on. Also, I loved track practices; playing the jams throughout the whole practice. It was fun when other athletes would start singing and getting into the songs. After high school I plan on going into the military.”
