Happy Cinco de Mayo!

The Mexican Independence is celebrated September 16 but Cinco de Mayo or (the fifth day) commemorates the Mexican`s army unlikely victory over the French forces of Napoleon III on May 5, 1862, at the battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867). It is a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations. Cinco de Mayo traditions include parades, mariachi music performances and street festivals in cities and towns across Mexico and in the United States. Some of us may take the celebration very serious and show off their Mexican pride in a very unique way.

Asian Pacific Takes the Stage

Yesterday was Asian Pacific's last performance of the year and the absolute last Asian-Pacific performance for any senior that was in the club. May I say as a reporter, they went out with a bang. I was able to talk to a few seniors about their last performance and club experience.

"It's makes sad to know that this is my last performance for Asian pacific because I've gotten to know so many new people and see them grow and it's great to know that this club helped many member break out of their shell."

-Selena Salinas

"Well overall it's just a great opportunity to be part of such an amazing club for all four years. This Expirence has been so fun and full of smiles. It's just a bittersweet moment, but it was bound to happen sometime" -Joseph Codamos

"I joined Asian Pacific my sophomore year and I'm very glad I made that choice. I met some talented people who helped & inspired me to grow in my dancing and as an individual. We've come a long way & I'm excited to do it one last time for my high school career. Were a family and always will be."

Student Spotlight: John Gutierrez

John Gutierrez recently broke the time for the 800 meter at the county meet where more than 15 schools attended. He broke the 1600 meter last Friday at league Pre-lums against 8 schools; Pac-8. He is now qualified to run at finals today, Thursday at Atascadero High School at 5pm.

Here are the details:

John is a Junior on our track team; a distance and 400 runner.

What he did: Broke the PVHS 1600 and 800 meter record.

1600: Was: 436.08 Now: 435.46

800: Was: 205.60 Now: 205.25

How do you feel about all your success?
“I know I could’ve gotten a better time but I was more determined to break the record first before breaking it again with a better time set.”What made you want to run track?“I started with cross country in the fall and I sucked at running. It was my first time actually running, so I figured I could get better. That was when the cross country coaches introduced me to track. I had no idea how or what it was going to be like. My first meet went really well. I was two seconds away from beating the 1600 (mile) record. On my first meet ever! I was so shocked I wanted to cry. I honestly got really emotional. After that, my work out schedule

changed which ended up effecting my race time. That’s when I got a spot with the 4 by 400 team. So by then I hadn’t run the mile in a month. I didn’t know where my time for the races would be at, until county. At county I was 1 second off from breaking the 1600 meter but I ended up breaking the 800 record the same day. The following week I finally broke the 1600 meter. By doing so, it qualified me to run at league finals for a chance to qualify for CIF.”

What or who motivated you?

“In cross country I was really slow. My mile time was 5:20. In the middle of the season I finally got below 5min and got 4:57. Couch Youngblood mentioned to me his personal school record. (4:36.08). That motivated me to beat his time. Ever since then, we would push each other at practices even now during track season. He’s still my coach. I wouldn’t have accomplished so much without his help, motivation, and training.”
