Panthers Take to the Water

-Deja Stewart & Zander Moreno

Yesterday Pioneer Valley swam against Mission Prep High School. Even though it was a close meet your panthers were able to come together as a team and take the win. Swim is not only a team sport but it helps improve individual perseverance.

The Voices by Alexis Dagar

I walk down the street trying not to make eye contact.

I grip my phone as it burns my palms,

Creating familiar scars upon them.

It's music yearning to be played;

To be listened to.

So I shove my earbuds in trying to drown out the voices around me.

I concentrate on the cracks in the concrete;

Wishing I could simply slip in between them.

Wish I could hide within the caves in my own head

Where only my echoes resound in such a place.

But the voices scream in my ear pleading for attention.

Forcing me to turn the volume higher; louder.

Trying to distract myself from what's outside that cave.

The voices grip my throat threatening to close my eyes.

The cave starts to crumble along with my thoughts.

My mind is fading and my fingers are shaking,

But I still turn the music up as

My brain throbs from the sound.

It's ear piercing enough that

I can't hear the words,

I can't hear my thoughts,

I can't hear myself.

St. Patrick's Day Origin

When the day of St. Patrick's come to mind most people think of a small, green leprechaun next to a pot of gold, or simply an excuse to pinch people for not wearing a certain color. However, no one really knows who St. Patrick is or where he came from.

St. Patrick's Day, also known as St. Patty's Day, is a Christian feast day held on St. Patrick's death date: March 17th. This day is to celebrate Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity that was introduced to Ireland, as well as simply recognizing the Irish culture and heritage. It is celebrated by having parades, parties, as well as dressing up in green attire and wearing shamrocks. St Patty's Day is the most celebrated out of any national festival. St Patrick's Day is celebrated out of Ireland due to people of Irish descent introducing this celebration to places like New Zealand, Argentina, Canada, and the United States. However, the modern celebration is becoming more and more commercialized, bringing the more stereotypical side of Ireland into the mix of things: pots of gold, leprechauns, rainbows, etc.

Before you go around pinching people for their lack of green clothes, just know that they did this because a small amount of Irish wore green due to the discrimination they experienced in the United States. However, the ones that did choose to express their Irish pride started pinching the ones that didn't for their lack of it, reminding them of where they came from. Happy St. Patrick's Day!
