PVHS Presents: Festival of the Arts

-Story and Video by Vanessa Nunez

Last Saturday PVHS hosted the first ever Festival of the Arts. The event included multiple workshops by PV’s visual and performing arts (and free pizza). Mrs. VanGronigen opened the event, she explained what the different workshops would be doing. Everything at the festival was so much fun; we got to see the beauty and skill of the performing arts. I got to sit in on the workshops of Marching band, Choir, and Ballet Folklorico, and it was a privilege to see them at work.

The most popular workshop was definitely Mr. Karamitsos’ freestyle art. Mr. Karamitsos opened his classroom doors and allowed everyone to come in and try different way of

creating art. There was so much going on, and every table had something different. Everyone found something to do. Mr. Paulus had chalk outside, which you can still see, it was fun to get messy and enjoy the sun. Everyone who picked up a piece of chalk made some beautiful designs.

The purpose of the festival was to showcase the performing arts offerings to those panthers interested in taking such classes; giving these people the experiences needed to decide what classes/clubs they would like to be a part of next year. Each workshop had step by step instruction and first hand help from teachers and other club members. It was great seeing so many PV students give up their Saturday morning to volunteer for the festival.

After the free pizza lunch, Ballet Folklorico performed a short dance and although the audience was small everyone was in awe by the dancer’s talent. The Festival managed to get even the shyest of people to try something new. After the choir performed, and Asian Pacific did a quick dance and then Joseph Madrigal and Devon Fuller, performed a hilarious exert from their two- man show. Marching Band closed the Festival. It was a lot of fun and I hope all of you go next year, even if you’re not interested in joining it’s still a good time with friends. You get to try a lot of new things…. FOR FREE.

“They have a better idea of what it’s all about. They can get the feel of the people. Some people are scared and with the festival they’ll feel close.”

–Annalisa Enriquez and Vanessa Perez“

I think it was great. The students showed up. Everyone got hands on work and I hope it keeps going. For the first time, it went really well.”

–Ms. VanGronigen

Sanders Wins PV Presidential Poll, Feel the Bern!

The results are in from our first ever survey and clearly PVHS wants Bernie Sanders to win the Presidency, however Bernie is losing! Today is Super Tuesday; that is 12 states are voting for their primaries. A primary is a state pledging their vote to a candidate for election. In July, each party will choose its candidate, usually the candidate with the most primaries. Those two will run head to head for President in November. Hilary Clinton is currently in the lead. If you Panthers really want Bernie to win, It’s up to you. When the primaries come to California get out there and vote and make sure your friends and family vote too!

Kiwanis Trivia Winners Share Strategy

This past Sunday was the Kiwanis Trivia Contest held at the Abel Maldonado Center where we had a team of 4 Panthers to participate: Zaid Khan, Mary Youngblood, Manuel Rolon, and Aaron Mendoza. At the event, teams were asked a set of 5 questions at a time. Each team would then be able to discuss their answers every 5 questions before turning them in. Once all of the answers were in, the next set of 5 questions were asked. There were 50 questions all together throughout the competition. The result of the contest was our Panthers earning 1st place! Congratulations to the few trivia masters!

-Christina Bulosan

"We talked about the contest shortly at school, but we were confident we would do decently well. When we got there, it was daunting to see that most of the teams were made up of VERY EXPERIENCED adults. There were a lot of questions we couldn't answer, but by the end, we scored a total of 18 with each of us contributing to a particular question no one else in the team could confidently answer." -Aaron Medoza (12).

"I didn't even know what it was until I got into it. I did have a lot more fun than I thought I would."

-Mary Youngblood (12)

"It was something new and interesting, because I had never been in a trivia contest before. I didn't really know how to study because I feel like trivia is something that comes with life experience. I felt my group was strong because they were all fairly smart."

-Manuel Rolon (12)

"I didn't really know what the trivia was going to be about at all. I just went into it blind, because Mr. Brown asked me to do it considering that I beat him on Trivia Crack last year. The competition itself was pretty fun. The questions were mostly tailored towards the older generation of teams that were playing, but somehow, we managed to get some answers correct." -Zaid Khan (12)
