The Origin of St. Valentine’s Day

-Jose Bernal

Don't be caught off gaurd, Valentine's Day is just around the corner! When we think of Valentine’s Day, we think of many things: flowers, chocolates, cards, proposals, etc. But what a lot of people don't know is why it is called Valentine’s Day and why do we give out gifts to each other?

Well, it all started back in Ancient Rome with a saint named, you guessed it, Valentine. When he was put under house arrest, many children sent him items like food and delicacies. Once, he was approached by a young girl who was blind. After receiving his gift from her, he prayed to the little girl and soon she regained sight. Prior to his execution on February 14 269 AD, he wrote a note to the girl signed with “Your Valentine.”

Today, Valentine’s Day is celebrated by many as to show how much people care for one another and that we should all appreciate our loved ones. Even though you can’t be like St. Valentine and get the affection of everyone, there is someone out there who thinks of you.

Movie Review: Sisters

-Catalina Lopez & Deja Stewart

Jason Moore's film Sisters conveys a hilarious and unique perspective to sisterhood. Sisters, Kate (Tina Fey) and Maura (Amy Poehler), are angered by their parents, who have told them they are selling their childhood house. In response, the sisters planned an unexpected trip to Florida to convince their parents to not sell it. When they arrive, they discover the house is already sold. For their last hurrah, they decided to have a house party with their old high school friends which leads to a downfall.

"I thought the movie was really funny and I could relate to Kate. I would really recommend it if you're looking for a good laugh." -Anamarie Fruge(12)

"The movie was a great movie to see when you need a good laugh. I especially enjoyed the contrast in personalities between the two characters Kate and Maura. I liked how Moore portrayed a different but realistic point of view of sisterhood. I liked how they weaved in other celebrities throughout the movie, such as John Cena and Maya Rudolph." -Cynthia Martinez (12)

"It was pretty funny because it had a witty sense of comedy. It reminded me of Parks and Recreation. It was like one of those movies that is good to watch with friends at a get together." -Manuel Rolon (12)

"I liked it, I thought it was funny." -Vanessa Ortiz (12)

Boys’ Wrestling Team Wins the FIRST CIF Championship in PV History

On Saturday the boys team went into the CIF duals championship at Ventura HS as the 6th seed and defeated 4 different league champion teams from the surrounding counties. The boys team defeated Santa Maria, Dos Pueblos, Thousand Oaks and in a rematch from two weeks ago our boys defeated the #1 seeded Righetti warriors in the finals 31-23.

Even though we are extremely happy for obtaining this honor we have no time to rest on our laurels. We compete Saturday at home for a PAC 8 league championship and next week we compete for another chance at a CIF championship in individuals.  -Coach Ilac
