Brandon Harper Remembered

-April Chavez

Nine years ago, Mr. Harper’s son was killed by a drunk driver in Santa Maria. His name was Brandon Harper and he was 26 years old. Mr. Harper is a Spanish teacher here at PV. He has expressed a desire for the student body to view the attached YouTube clips regarding his son’s death.

Death is something that shocks us with its timing and the way it happens is sometimes out of our control. But when it comes to drunk driving, we can put a stop to it. If you know you are under the influence or see anyone that is, never let them get behind a wheel. They are not only putting their life in risk, but possibly someone else’s as well.

For the full story on the accident, it is available at this link as reported by the Lompoc Record:

What’s Your New Year’s Resolution?

-Melanie Naraval

2016 has just begun and many people have made resolutions. A lot of people want to lose weight or work out more, some want to do really well in their education or work, others want to spend more time with family and friends, and a few might want to have a positive mindset instead of a negative one. Whether it’s a resolution that might change your life or something small that might improve your day to day life, resolutions are something we could all make. Here are a few students from PV that explains their resolutions:

Abby Prado (9) - “My New Year’s resolution is to achieve higher grades. It may sound corny but I really want to do what’s best for myself this year.” Abby explained that she wants to reach for a goal that she can actually achieve if she works hard and doesn’t procrastinate.

Gonzalo Gonzalez (12) - “My New Year’s resolution is to be the best person I can be. This was my resolution last year as well, and it makes me feel self-improved. I did it last year, so I can do it this year.”

Joe Garcia (11) tells us that his resolution for 2016 is to be determined within school and his social life. “I feel like it’ll help me feel better about myself and I’ll be stronger than before. I do think I will actually do this resolution for 2016.”

Gabriela Martinez (10) - “My New Year’s resolution is to drink 5 water bottles a day, run or ride a bike for an hour, and get 50+ hours of volunteering by the end of the semester. The running is to help me since I’m on the track team. Getting 50+ volunteering hours will be a challenge for me. I chose these resolutions for my own health and to accomplish my goals of looking better and therefore feeling better.”
